The Andaman Sea undergoes beautiful seasonal transformations, but many travellers assume winter is the only time to cruise. In truth, our master mariners utilise Phuket's unique topography to design safe, glass-flat expeditions all year round.
Understanding the Southwest Monsoon
During the southwest monsoon (roughly May through October), the open Andaman Sea west of Phuket experiences increased swell and wind — conditions that make outer destinations like Koh Racha and Phi Phi Islands less predictable for smaller vessels. However, the eastern coast of Phuket and Phang Nga Bay remain perfectly sheltered from these oceanic swells.
Phang Nga Bay is a massive geological bay scattered with hundreds of sheer limestone islands that act as a natural barrier to open-ocean swell. While the outer Andaman may experience 1.5–2 metre waves during strong monsoon periods, Phang Nga's prehistoric chambers and sea tunnels remain tranquil and flat — often glassier than the open sea in the dry season.
The Best Monsoon Season Destinations
James Bond Island (Koh Tapu) sits deep inside Phang Nga Bay and is accessible year-round regardless of weather. The dramatic limestone karst scenery here rivals Phi Phi for photography — the iconic isolated rock pillar rising vertically from the emerald bay is one of Thailand's most photographed natural features.
Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai, sitting in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, offer protected anchorages, deserted beaches, and authentic Thai fishing village access that the busier western islands cannot match. During the high season these islands are notably quieter than Phi Phi — during the monsoon season you may have them entirely to yourself.
How We Monitor and Adapt
Direct fleet ownership allows us to run daily weather briefs with our own captains rather than relying on third-party operator forecasts. Every Andaman Signature vessel is equipped with integrated marine weather systems that pull real-time data from the Thai Meteorological Department, international GRIB model feeds, and direct wind reports from our network of captains already at sea.
If outer islands like Koh Racha are experiencing winds above our safety threshold on your charter date, we immediately present alternative protected routes of equal or greater scenic quality. No cancellations, no refunds requested — just intelligent, dynamic routing that guarantees a smooth, beautiful day regardless of the broader weather pattern.
